Muckraker: An Abstract Audio Distortion Effect

Muckraker is a free multimedia application developed by Matthew Caldwell for the iPhone. It is an abstract audio distortion effect that allows you to annihilate your sound in a unique way. Whether you want to add a gentle fuzz to your guitar or blast your synth harmonies into brutal white noise, Muckraker has got you covered.

One of the key features of Muckraker is its compatibility with other music apps such as GarageBand. You can easily connect Muckraker to these apps via Inter-App Audio or Audiobus, expanding your creative possibilities. Additionally, you can map external controllers to the effect controls using learnable MIDI CC.

Muckraker also offers multitasking capabilities on supported iOS 9+ iPads. You can use it in split screen or slide-over mode, allowing you to seamlessly integrate it into your music production workflow.

Please note that Muckraker starts out muted for a good reason, as it can produce feedback. If you don't hear any sound, make sure to check the mute button. You can also switch off the automatic muting in the iOS Settings.

Although Muckraker does not provide an Audio Unit extension, it still offers a unique and powerful audio distortion effect. Keep in mind that Muckraker and its sibling apps are not future-proof, as they rely on the soon-to-be-obsolete IAA technology. However, they provide a distinctive sound experience that may be worth exploring while it lasts.
